The connection between parents and children defies understanding in spite of all of the societal expectations. Even if you hate one of your parents, you still love them. Even if your child is living on their own on the other side of the world they are constantly on your mind. Some day, I’d like to write a book about some examples of this coexistence of extreme opposites but drawing is the more accessible form of expression for me, so I tried to tackle the topic in this oil pastel. I used the palimpsest here to infer, trying to scratch away the surface appearance/meaning to get at the unknown rule that allows these sometimes contradictory feelings to have such strength simultaneously.
